Enogen Value Tracker at #FEW15

Cindy Zimmerman

few15-enogenThe color purple is taking on a new significance in the grain world as Syngenta has introduced the Enogen Value Tracker – a naturally derived, non-GMO purple tracer trait designed to simplify grain tracking.

Chris Cook, Head of Enogen Stewardship for Syngenta, discussed the Enogen Value Tracker, during an innovation session and tweet chat at the Fuel Ethanol Workshop on Wednesday.

“Beginning this year, the Enogen Value Tracker is being included in select bags of Enogen hybrids,” Cook said. “In seed bags featuring the Enogen Value Tracker, up to five percent of seeds will contain the purple tracer trait that will be expressed in the corn plant and through random kernels on the purple plant ear.”

The purple kernels will make it easier to visually track Enogen corn from harvest through storage and processing, and also to help ensure this high-value grain is delivered to its intended destination which is important since farmers who grow Enogen corn for contracted plants earn an average premium of 40 cents per bushel.

Novozymes Focused on Solutions at #FEW15

Cindy Zimmerman

few15-novo-peterNovozymes has a number of products to help ethanol producers increase profitability but the focus is more on solutions than products.

“We have a broad and flexible portfolio but for Novozymes it’s really about the individual customer,” said Peter Halling, Novozymes Senior Director Global Marketing for Biofuels. “Products are an integral part of what we do, the enzyme, but on top of that you need a strong service portfolio.”

Novozymes is an international company but Halling says they are most excited about the biofuels industry in the United States. “I’m a Dane, but coming here to the U.S. and being part of this industry, it’s the innovation and the spirit of the industry here,” said Halling, who says the United States is clearly a leader in the biofuels industry. “It’s the world’s biggest exporter of ethanol, and you’ve got a fantastic homegrown market. Not only do you create jobs and energy security but it’s also fantastic from a sustainability angle.”

What’s Fueling Your Grill?

Jamie Johansen

New Holland ZimmPollOur latest ZimmPoll asked the question, “What should Congress do about COOL?”

Those who chimed in for our recent poll on Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) seem to be leaning towards the creation of a generic North American label. Followed closely by a voluntary program or a repeal for meat products. What will Congress do?…time will tell. Listen to comments from Sec. Vilsack, Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) and the House Ag Committee press conference here.

Here are the poll results:

  • Repeal for meat products – 15%
  • Make program voluntary – 21%
  • Create generic North American label – 36%
  • Delay action as long as possible – 0%
  • Ignore it – 14%
  • Other – 14%

Our new ZimmPoll is now live and asks the question, What fuels your grill?

Many parts of the country are still experiencing mild temps or overly wet conditions. But that doesn’t stop many from pulling out their grills to kick off the summer months. What’s your go to grilling method?

EPA Proposal Threatens Advanced Ethanol #FEW15

Cindy Zimmerman

few15-colemanThe executive director of the Advanced Ethanol Council believes the proposed volume obligations under the RFS would have significant ramifications for the industry if not changed before being finalized.

“What’s at stake is whether ethanol gets out of its E10 cage,” said Brooke Coleman during the general session of the Fuel Ethanol Workshop on Tuesday, challenging President Obama to make good on his promises to move renewable energy forward in this country. “President Bush signed the most progressive advanced biofuel policy in the world and President Obama, at least to this point, has been too weak-kneed to implement it,” said Coleman to applause.

Coleman says there is reason to be optimistic in the face of the bad RVO proposal since the industry still has a chance to change the final rule. “We cannot be disappointed. We can be angry and we should be engaged with the Obama administration.”

RFA CEO Outlines Wrong Moves by EPA at #FEW15

Cindy Zimmerman

few15-dinneenFor Renewable Fuels Association president and CEO Bob Dinneen, the newest proposal for volume obligations under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) is just the latest in a series of wrong moves by the Environmental Protection Agency.

“There’s something desperately wrong with the EPA,” said Dinneen after outlining more than a dozen ways the agency has worked to undermine the ethanol industry and the RFS, from the use of Indirect Land Use Change (ILUC) to judge the carbon footprint of biofuels, to not allowing E15 to be sold in the summer months.

Dinneen says there is a lot of talk in Washington about EPA’s “war on coal” but after the agency released both a final rule on the Waters of the United States last week and the lower volume obligations under the RFS, “they now seem to have a war on farmers.”

Louisiana Clean Fuels has awarded its Fleet of the Year Award to Republic Services of Baton Rouge for their use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). Republic’s collection company, BFI Waste Services has reduced its use of petroleum and emissions by using CNG. Louisiana Clean Fuels presented the Award at its 15th annual Clean Fuel Leader Awards Gala in Baton Rouge on Thursday evening, May 21.

“We have a responsibility to lead by example, and reduce vehicle emissions whenever possible,” said Alexander Burgess, area president of Republic Services. “We believe that we can make a meaningful difference in the communities we serve by doing our part to preserve the natural beauty of the Gulf Coast for future generations. Our employees are proud to call Louisiana home, which makes this recognition special on a personal level for every member of our team.”

Republic Services CNG truckRepublic added 42 CNG powered collection trucks and installed a new natural gas fueling station to support its expanding fleet in Baton Rouge in 2014. Republic plans to deploy 18 additional CNG powered trucks this summer. This expansion, combined with the CNG fleet already serving customers in the Shreveport area, is expected to make Republic Services’ collection company the largest natural gas fleet operator in the State of Louisiana.

“Louisiana Clean Fuels is dedicated to educating both public and private fleets on the benefits of alternative fuels as well as assisting them in their efforts to transition to cleaner burning, domestically produced alternative fuels,” said Ann Shaneyfelt, executive director of Louisiana Clean Fuels, a designated Clean Cities Coalition. “That’s exactly what Republic Services is doing in our area and nationwide. We congratulate Republic for their progress in converting their Louisiana Fleet to CNG. This year, we are proud to honor them with the Louisiana Clean Fuels ‘Fleet of the Year’ award for their successful roll out of their CNG refuse haulers at their Baton Rouge Division.”

According to Republic Services, they operate a fleet of more than 2,200 CNG vehicles and 36 natural gas fueling stations nationwide, and their CNG fleet helps to save roughly 18 million gallons of diesel fuel annually.
