Omaha-based ethanol producer Green Plains Inc. has signed a deal for the transfer a minimum of $250 million worth of 45Z Clean Fuel Production Tax Credits generated across all nine of its biorefineries located in Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska. The buyers will purchase additional credits up to a total of $325 million, with an option to purchase an additional $30 million, subject to their generation and availability.
The value is based on anticipated credit generation under current carbon intensity (CI) scores across the Green Plains fleet and does not assume incremental investment in additional low-carbon initiatives or future CI improvements, which could drive further credit generation and value.
Green Plains will receive $140 million of cash in the fourth quarter for 45Z tax credits generated through June 30, 2026. Credits generated in the third and fourth quarters of 2026 will be transferred and monetized in the first half of 2027, following completion of required compliance reporting and satisfaction of applicable closing conditions.
